Earth Month is here! It may not feel like spring, but here at a New Beginning, we are celebrating the season regardless of the snow! As many of you know, every year a New Beginning partners with Aveda and fellow Aveda salons and experience centers around the world in fundraising efforts to help give back to the environment. Since the birth of Aveda’s Earth Month campaign in 1999, Aveda has raised over $56 MILLION dollars to protect clean water around the world.

We are so excited to kick off Earth Month 2018 with our Annual Earth Month Raffle for the chance to win a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR gift certificate to a New Beginning. Raffle tickets are 1 for $3, 2 for $5, or an arm’s length for $10 (don’t worry we’ll find the longest arm for you!). When you win your $500 gift certificate, you can use it on ANB experiences AND Aveda homecare! In addition to our Annual Earth Month Raffle, join a New Beginning for our Earth Month Celebration on Earth Day, April 22, from 1 to 5. A New Beginning will be offering haircuts, blowouts, mini spa services, massages, and more! Call us to schedule your appointment! All proceeds go to Clean Ocean Action’s clean water efforts. Continue the celebration with us after the event, next door at Prime Pub Bethel and Prime Pub will generously donate 25 percent of all ANB food and beverage referrals!

Clean Ocean Action is an incredible nonprofit organization based out of New Jersey. They are a national and regional voice who work to protect our waterways and local shorelines. Clean Ocean Action celebrates their 34th anniversary this year! Clean Ocean Action uses “science, law, research, education, and citizen action” to protect our local waterways and have successfully closed eight ocean dumpsites. Their successful campaigns include;

• “Improve programs and laws that protect public health at swimming beaches.

• Reduce plastics and litter that pollute waterways, spoil beautiful beaches and harm or kill marine life.
• Protect coasts from oil and gas drilling in the ocean, including Maine to Florida.
• Establish the nation’s first Clean Ocean Zone to start a national chain reaction for all coasts.
• Reduce toxins in waterways to ensure fish and shellfish are free of pollution and safe to eat.
• Educate and motivate citizens from the small to the tall.” 1

A New Beginning also joins Aveda in raising money for Global Greengrants Fund with Aveda’s Light the Way Candles. Global Greengrants Fund’s mission is to “protect the environment, we invest in the people who eat from the land, who drink the water, and who want to see a better life for their children and generations to come.”2  In other words, Global Greengrants Fund works with the local people to provide for their specific needs, whether that means they provide close fresh water so the locals don’t need to walk for hours to fetch fresh clean water. When you donate to Global Greengrants Fund you are truly helping and reaching all edges of this world. Aveda’s Limited-Edition Light the Way Candle is a soy wax candle with a wonderful aroma. Be transported to with a Haitian-inspired aroma of certified organic vetiver and other pure flower and plant essences. Each candle is $14 and 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to Global Greengrants Fund.

A Hospitable Field Trip

Earlier in January, the Hospitality Team got to go on a field trip! Eight of us had the opportunity to travel to the Westfarms Mall up in West Hartford, Connecticut and visited the Aveda Experience Center. We had such a wonderful time; we almost decided to move in!

As many of you know, education is very important to us at a New Beginning. We believe that learning never ends and that we are at our best when we strive for more. A New Beginning frequently looks for opportunities, such as this field-trip, to further our education. As the wonderful Dr. Seuss wrote:

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” 

There are a handful of Aveda Experience Centers scattered throughout the United States and several other countries across the globe. Without being attached to a salon or spa, these Experience Centers focus singularly on Aveda products and the rituals attached to those products. Because of this concentration, the staff members at these establishments have a thorough and deep understanding of Aveda’s mission.

The Hospitality Team absolutely loved the experience we had. We got to meet the Westfarms Mall’s Aveda Experience Center’s manager, Tanya and her colleague Asha. They were so warm and so welcoming, we felt as though we were reuniting with family! Despite the aching cold we traveled on and were warmed up by their infectious friendliness. Starting with a cup of Aveda Comforting Tea, we felt right at home.

Once we had thawed, Tanya and Asha were able to guide us through several Aveda rituals. Typically, our job entails welcoming Guests, assisting them with organizing their appointments, and ensuring that they have a genuinely relaxing experience while under our care. So for us, it was incredibly indulgent to experience the rituals we enviously watch our Guests receive. When it came to demonstrating Aveda rituals, it was no challenge for Tanya or Asha to find a volunteer among us.

Carol was our first volunteer! Tanya led her through a deeply relaxing ritual using the Stress Fix product line. Combining the Stress Fix Soaking Salts and the Stress Fix Composition Oil, Tanya gave a hand massage that left the rest of us envious. Watching this routine, we could truly see the positive impact it had on Carol.  She appeared much more at ease and seemed free of any bodily tension. It was a great reminder that we have an opportunity to bring that level of relaxation to all of our Guests.

Regardless of the industry you are employed in, it is valuable to be re-educated on your focus of work. We, in Hospitality, love what we do and we want to ensure that we do not lose sight on the passion behind what we do. Going on trips like this one, not only prevents our work experience from becoming stale, but it helps remind us of how much we love Aveda and the values they so ardently espouse. At its core, Aveda is designed to bring well being to others. It was remarkable for us to see that these values can be consistently found at any Aveda location.
